2-stroke strimmer starting problems..B
Wednesday 1st July 2009
I've got a cheapie JCB 2 stroke strimmer - can't get the damn thing to run. It worked fine when I last used it 3 or 4 weeks ago.
It will start okay when primed for about 5 secs and then dies irrespective of what you do with the choke or throttle. It's got fuel with the correct mixture.
All I can think is the carb jet is blocked and it's just running on the fuel in the bowl every time I prime it.
The manual is no help of course. I can see the carb and can get to it if I take the little air box off, but it's not immediately obvious how to get it apart.
Anybody got any advice before I buy it and buy an electric one?

Checked spark plug isn't gunked up? fuel lines ok? we had a similar thing with our old generator.

I figured that the plug must be OK because it will run for 5-10 secs before dying. Likewise I can see the fuel in the pipes and it primes fine, but bubbles appear when it cuts out (because I assume it's not getting sucked into the carb due to a blocked jet or something).

I had a similar one (B&Q sort of own brand) until some scrote nicked it from my shed. Anyway, the fuel line had split because the material used was not resistant to petrol attack over more than a few months. It's hard to get at, but if you remove the fuel tank you might find that you have the same problem. HTH

Almost certainly there is a blockage in the fuel pipe or jets, two stroke oil turns to gummy residue very easily, if the item has not been run for a while...
Yes, definitely related to fuel starvation..Is there a fuel filter?..

Spent weeks trying to get my 2 stroke petrol strimmer to start, then thanks to advice on the net, managed to get the strimmer started, and since then it has started first time every time.
First check the gap on the sparkplug, 25 thou, then check when pulling the starter cord the sparkplug is sparking. Pour a few drops of engine oil in the sparkplug hole, and with finger over the hole, pull the starting cord to feel for compression.
I then purchased new petrol, and made up a fresh 1-25 mix of two stroke oil, used full choke, after a couple of pulls I then went to half choke, fired up, and ever since started first time.
If the above fails for you, then you might trying pouring a table spoon of fuel down the spark plug hole, refitting spark plug and removing air filter, then attempting start up.

This is possibly the best information on the net for how to tune a 2 stroke carb;

Yes, great info. Bought a branded motor strimmer from a shopping channel last year. OK at first but got less keen to start after a while and local garden machinery engineers said that the carb adjustments were often screwed down as far as needed to get through emissions checks resulting in a too lean mix. They 'unwound' the adjusters a bit and it was much improved.http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/milling/mess..

I bought a bmc two strokes trimmer/ strimmer that would only run for a couple of minutes after cleaning everything i could think of I swapped the two fuel lines about and hey presto it now starts and runs ok. Might be worth giving this a go before binning it

I fear after 7 years since this post the replacements replacement may have been binned.

Sometimes strimmers can be difficult to start. I find that with my one, sometimes I have to switch back to choke on then choke off and repeat a few times until the engine will run continuously without stalling.
You can try a few things.
Make sure the tank vent is unblocked. This may fitted in the tank cap or alternatively at the top of the tank body. This is usually a duck bill valve, so check whether the two halves of the 'bill' are ok , not clogged nor stuck together.
Use the proper fuel oil ratio. Usually 50:1 but some manufacturers recommend 25:1. 40: 1 is probably a good compromise.
Clean the air filter and exhaust screen.
The diaphragm pump section may have deteriorated and the only solution is a replacement.
I've written a guide called 'String Trimmer (Strimmer) Won't Work - 2-Stroke Engine and Carburetor Troubleshooting' but I'm not allowed to post a link here.

OK as it's good free advice and you don't appear to be trying to sell us anything, I can't think why not, so I'll post the linkhttps://dengarden.com/landscaping/String-Trimmer-W..

Use Stihl synthetic 2T oil, at 50:1 for a quality 2T engine - 30:1 for Chinese cheapies. It never gels, and is bright green so you won't mix up the fuels!
Expensive stuff, but I run it on a racing outboard (Mercury XS 300hp) at 40:1 or 30:1 to be on the safe side. Never had a problem with it yet.
Most race boats run a rich oil to fuel ratio because they are tuned up to the max, and the last thing you want is the 'self-oiling' system killing your engine.
