(Da Black Gobo)
With six eager gamers ready to learn the system. The first game at Acme Games in Mt. Washington went well. After a quick summary of the rules, play stats were given to each team of players and the war began. The battle was to be a deep defence, with the marines defending and the bugs attacking. To delay the advance of the arachnids were four 5 man squads of marines each with either a triplethud gun or a javelin rocket launcher. For what ever reason the NCO that would have led this force was called elsewhere. (Left at home). To help the marines were a bunker and a ammo dump.
The arachnids were attempting to overwhelm the marines with tunneling assets and 2 units of 10 warriors, 4 units of 5 warriors, and heavy support from 1 tanker bug.
The battlefield itself was on a 6' by 4' table, consisting of scattered rocky ground, with a huge mountain located in the left centre of the board, and a long ridge which was against the edge of the marine side of the table. On top of the ridge was the bunker and near it the ammo dump. The 'nids put a tunnel entrance between the bunker and the ammo dump, making the marines somewhat nervious.
Pvt. McDaniel was worried. What the hell was Sicon thinking having his unit posted so far forward. On top of that, he had no faith in Sgt. Works who had been a recent tranfer into is squad. Sure, Works had plenty of years of service, but this was his first real combat. McDaniel knew his unit should be further back defending the bunker, but orders are orders...
Turn one had the marines opting to go first. Quickly two rockets were launched toward the surging line of warriors downing a total of 4 of the brutes. Other marines units moved into positions while the ones that fired readied themselves since they had been deployed forward of the ridge.
The nids responded by moving all thier warriors forward the full distance, one unit of 10 used the mountain as cover, while two tunnel markers moved underground, one with a tanker the second with the other 10 warriors.
Turn two had the marines open up on the warriors again. One of the units that were ready jumped toward the ridge away from the wave of warriors while the other unwisely decided to fire twice. After the smoke cleared 1 unit of 5 warriors were gone while another had 2 models left. Total loses were now 14 dead warriors. Now it was time for payback. The Tanker bug broke ground near the marine unit that had fired twice. Without the support of the missle launch, the marines could do next to nothing to avoid the tanker. Then flaming hell hit the unit when the tanker as it second action spit fire.
Pvt. McDaniel shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts. The last thing he remembered was a wall of flame and the screaming of his friends. Now he saw nothing but smoke. Without seeing McDaniel knew is unit was destroyed. He could smell the acrid scent of burning flesh all around him.
The rest of the warriors continued their relentless attack forward, while the remaining tunneling marker continued toward the bunker.
Turn 3 showed the resolve of the remaining marines. Angered at the loss of thier fellows they showered the tanker with bugshot, grenades, and rockets. With hot dice, and poor save rolls they were able to wound the beast 3 times. Good but not near good enough. Also 3 warriors fell in the firestorm. The tanker stung by the marine fire dropped back down the tunnel and started to lumber toward the marine firing lines. The rest of the warriors along with the tunnelling unit continued toward the thin green line of marines. Then something strange began to happen... The marine players seemed to roll mostly 1s, and the bug players were making all thier saves when the shots were on target. This trend continue thru turn four.....
Turn 4 had marines open fire while the unit near the bunker jumped to join the rest the the marine forces on the right. It looked like the marines were concentrating themselves for the final turn giving ready orders and preparing bug shot grenades for the comming slaughter. Squad A keep itself somewhat forward at the ammo dump prepared to sell thier lives dearly for thier comrades to have a chance to survive. The bugs used thier movement to surge forward within reaction range of Squad A. In the firestorm that followed Squad A reacting 3 times shot down 6 bugs while Pvt. Lewis was impaled by the attacking bugs. The Tanker moved forward and lifted it's hulking form out of the dirt.
Turn Five The marines knew the had to stop the Tanker or what happened to C squad was about to happen to them. Bugshot ammo flew at the Tankers along with grenades and rockets. The behemoth seem to be made of stone and most of the weapons bounced off its back. Two more wounds were caused, and the massive bugs frame seemed to sag as it neared death with 5 wounds. The tanker in its fear and anger spit flaming death and 5 marines from two squads were caught its blast. Then the 10 warrior bugs that positioned itself last turn broke ground and attacked Sgt. Murthy's A squad
Sgt. Murthy of squad A seemed to be everywhere at once. Wave after wave of bug warriors crashed against the walls of the open top bunker and ammo dump. Completely surround he seem a war god of the old legends, dodging death with each turn. One by one his soldiers had been dragged down, but not him, covered in green ichor of a half dozen bugs, Murthy fought with a fury that was unheard of, a fury that would earn him a metal of honor for his part in this battle. Murthy didn't care, all he could think of is killing the bugs that wiped out his unit, and with a black thought, the chance of payback to Master Sgt. Yates for leaving the battle in his charge....
The end of the game had the remaining marines jumping out of certain death, but not without loss. Squad A consisted of only Sgt. Murthy. Squad C only Pvt. McDaniel. Squad B, Pvt. Washington. Only Squad D seem to come out nearly intact with the loss of only one trooper. The nids had a crippled tanker, 1 warrior unit of 8, another of 5, and a final warrior unit of only 1 model. Total points were awarded. Total marine 568 pts., bugs 885 pts. Victory, Arachnid Empire!!
This was a very close run thing for both sides. Great saves by the nids and the missing NCO for the marines would have easily made a difference.
Private McDaniel couldn't believe his eyes, the wave of leggy death passed over him without a thought. It seem the hive mind was focused on the marine position on the slopes above. Keenly aware of the loss of his comrades, McDaniel bounced toward the wail of the distance retrieval beacon, consoling himself with the fact that at least he would not have to worry about Sgt. Works anymore........
